Student Services

Communication is a key component to the success and support of students in any school setting. The Fletcher Academy model of instruction is based on the cooperative efforts of school, family, and community.

Students, parents, faculty, and outside agencies and therapists each require coordinated information regarding student services. Personal counseling, problem-solving, conflict resolution, communication skills, as well as emotional and behavioral challenges, are a few of the issues addressed through counseling. In all cases, parents are involved and informed of the school’s efforts to strengthen the students’ support systems.

Academic counseling as it relates to class scheduling at TFA, transitions to and from other schools, and post-high school plans are important functions of student services and parents and students are encouraged to work with the service providers to review and revise educational plans around personal goals.

Student services coordinates appropriate standardized testing, including the PSAT and SAT

Standardized achievement tests are administered for pre and post comparisons using grade equivalent scores. The information is used to help with placement and scheduling, to monitor growth, and provide data to other educational settings.

History

Our school is the first and oldest independent day school in North Carolina for students with learning differences. It began in 1981 as The Achievement School, where its founder, Dr. Leon Silber, was joined by a handful of enthusiastic instructors and students.  Since then, the school has grown to employ a faculty of more than 25 teachers, and annual enrollment has increased to nearly 120 students.  In 2004, the school changed its name to The Fletcher Academy to recognize the ongoing philanthropic support from and partnership with the AJ Fletcher Foundation. TFA has always offered students a structured academic environment focused on developing sequential academic progress.  We specifically emphasize skills development in the areas of reading, writing, and math, while supporting the development of the whole child across a wide array of disciplines. Over the years TFA has secured a solid reputation within the region as a school of achievement for those with learning differences. We are proud to have a joyful community where learners experience success within a rich, dynamic and vibrant school environment.
