I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for. - Georgia O'KeefeFine Arts at TFA includes not only academic study, but our work is also an integral component of our school and community. Students show their work at various venues inside and outside of the school. They exhibit their work at the annual Raleigh Street Painting Festival, State Fair, Wake County Artists’ Exhibit, and various Art Shows around the country. Students contribute to Community Service projects, create large murals for the school, design posters and decorations for school events and take part in Artists’ Residency programs. The Fine Arts Studio is an open environment where students freely use a variety of materials for creative self-expression. Various art mediums and tools are utilized, and our study and research includes sources such as film, art history, libraries, internet articles, and sketchbooks to create not only individual but also group projects. Elementary ArtStudents in Elementary Art work with a variety of media that include painting, drawing, clay, natural materials and sculpture. These processes expose elementary students to methods and techniques that develop fine motor skills while exploring self-expression and creativity. Students are exposed to art history as well as multi-cultural art with special emphasis placed on group work, allowing students to practice and learn social skills. Middle School and High School ArtMiddle and High School Art introduces students to art history, art terminology, and new mediums for expression. Creative manipulation of materials is encouraged. Students work with media that may include pastels, painting, drawing, collage, calligraphy, clay, jewelry making, natural materials and stone. Students are expected to critique their work, rethink their initial ideas and look for ways to make improvements. This enhances their critical thinking skills and ability to problem solve. Independent as well as group work is encouraged.
